AI, Knowledge Systems, and Research Methodology

This research theme focuses on the design, evaluation, and application of custom-built artificial intelligence systems as methodological infrastructure for research in the humanities and social sciences.

The Institute develops AI systems tailored to specific research tasks such as structuring complex sources, supporting comparative analysis, and assisting in the interpretation of large, multilingual, or heterogeneous bodies of material. Artificial intelligence is treated not as a general-purpose solution, but as a set of methods designed in close relation to defined intellectual goals.

Work under this theme addresses questions of transparency, interpretability, bias, and methodological accountability. All AI-supported processes remain embedded in human-led research workflows and subject to continuous documentation and critical evaluation.

This theme provides the methodological foundation for many of the Institute’s other research areas.
